Through Her Lens: The Life and Vision of Lee Miller

Explore the extraordinary life of photographer Lee Miller, who moved from the world of fashion to the frontlines of World War II. As a war correspondent for Vogue, Miller documented the human cost of conflict with unflinching honesty and empathy.

From the London Blitz to the liberation of Paris, and from the frontlines to the harrowing scenes at Dachau, Lee Miller's (1907–1977) lens captured both the courage and the suffering of soldiers and civilians alike. Miller’s work had a profound impact on France’s memory of the war, preserving pivotal moments with a sensitivity and artistic vision that still resonate deeply today. Her images of the liberation of Paris in particular stand as enduring testaments to resilience, freedom, and the role of artists in shaping historical memory.

This program is presented in conjunction with the major exhibition currently on view at the Tate Britain, which is shining new light on Miller’s groundbreaking career and legacy. Together, the exhibition and this lecture offer a timely opportunity to revisit her contributions to both photography and history through a Franco-American lens. The event will be composed of a 45-50 min lecture in English, followed by an optional 10-15 minute Q&A session in French.

About the Art Historian
