ONLINE CLASSES OVERVIEW
We start planning for a partial re-opening for some on-site classes and events starting September 2021. Some classes and events will also be offered online. Official announcements will be made by the beginning of August. Merci de votre patience!
Due to the situation around the COVID-19 outbreak in the USA and the directives of the state of Pennsylvania, the Alliance Française de Philadelphie is now offering courses online.
What is an online class? An online class is a live video conference with your instructor and fellow students that will follow the usual format and syllabus.
How does it work? The Alliance Francaise de Philadelphie is using Zoom for all the virtual classes. In addition to that, students and instructors can find their own class on a platform called Apolearn. It very much looks like a Facebook page: Your contacts are your instructor and your classmates. Functions include activity feed, sharing resources and articles, and an online chat. Students can also practice and do their homework, record their voices and videos (recordings are private and are not used "outside" the class)
What do I need? A computer with a webcam and a microphone, an internet connexion. Please click here to read more information about online classes tech tips and practices before class. Click here if you want to download and print the instructions.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS THINK:
"I am currently living over 1 hour from Phila. I am glad to learn from home as part of a small class. Our teacher, Alissia, was quite effective in person and now she is, as well, on line".
"It allows me to maintain and continue to improve my French skills , especially with conversation. My instructor Yann has been able to do an amazing job making the class productive and enjoyable in advancing our skills. The format he used our last class where he writes on the screen was incredibly helpful. He has clearly put a tremendous amount of time & effort into creating an excellent online learning experience, and his patience in helping us navigate using Zoom- is wonderful".
"We don't have to violate our social distancing requirements, or put ourselves at risk. Also don't need travel time. I also like the idea that, if I moved away, I could still take the class".
"During a difficult time, this keeps me socially connected and offers a mental challenge".
"Being able to continue learning despite quarantine. Also Norman’s enthusiasm for learning new ways to use zoom each week really makes me smile, his excitement is contagious and I’m thrilled to be able to continue learning from him".
Of course, there are negatives and glitches, mostly related to sound and difference with in-person class: This is why we do our best to create a friendly atmosphere and make sure our instructors and students receive proper information about online classes.
"A virtual room isn’t quite the same as being together in person".
"Missing out on body cues, sound difficulties".
"Sound is a bit difficult, internet speed issues, delay in video, distractions due to being at home".
"If there is background noise in one of the participants' sites, it can seize the podium and stop the conversation which is going on. Not bad, but participants do have to learn to avoid doing this".
"Some very brief audio issues on last class but it resolved quickly".
