PARLONS HISTOIRE - Les femmes de la Résistance : Berty ALBRECHT

Les Grandes Figures féminines de la Résistance

The French Resistance is too often described in masculine terms. However, women played an important and neglected role. This new cycle of Parlons Histoire entitled "Les grandes figures féminines de la Résistance", pays tribute to these unsung heroines. Aubrac, De Gaulle-Anthonioz, Albrecht, Tillion and Fourcade are among them! Each month, we invite you to discover the exciting and tragic lives of these Braves among the Brave, who command respect and admiration...

*** FEBRUARY SESSION ***

FEBRUARY 1st : Berty ALBRECHT (1893-1943)

Born into a Swiss Protestant family, Berty Albrecht studied in Marseille and Lausanne and obtained her nursing diploma in 1912. During the First World War she worked in military hospitals. She married a Dutch banker in 1918, lived in the Netherlands and then in London, where she became passionate about the women's cause.
Back in France in the 1930's, she created the feminist magazine Le Problème Sexuel. She then visited the USSR, from where she returned disappointed. She fell in love with Captain Henri Fresnay, a Resistance fighter who founded the National Liberation Movement in 1940. Arrested in April 1942, she was imprisoned by the Vichy government. Fearing deportation, she feigned madness and was committed to a psychiatric hospital, from which she escaped...
She then went into hiding in the Cévennes and then in Toulouse. In 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo in Lyon in the presence of Klaus Barbie. Tortured, she was found hanged the same day in her cell in the Fresnes prison... She was immediately promoted to the rank of Companion of the Liberation by General de Gaulle, leader of the Free French.
