*** BOOK OF THE MONTH ***
- Petit pays de Gaël Faye - 218 pages
Petit Pays (Small country), Gaël Faye’s first novel, is partly inspired by the author's own life, although it is not
strictly autobiographical. Set in Burundi and Rwanda from 1993 onwards, this novel has the unusual feature to be narrated by a 10 year-old
child, Gaby, who lives in a comfortable district of Bujumbura with his French father and Rwandan mother. While his sheltered upbringing had
prevented him from experiencing the increasing tensions between the Hutu majority and the Tutsi minority (which he belongs to through his
mother), the outbreak of civil war and genocide in neighboring Rwanda will brutally shatter Gaby and his group of friends’ lives.
