Les Odalisques - Jacqueline Marval, 1902-1903
French avant-garde artist Jacqueline Marval painted what could very well be the first female nude self-portraits to be
exhibited. Her Les Odalisques provoked audiences at the Salon des Indépendants in 1903. This came a few years after she
announced herself with the singular nude self-portrait L’Odalisque au Guépard in 1901. Marval is significant for her
boldness, beauty, and liberation. Her painting Les Odalisques reflects her référence to the tiresome yet persistent
motif of the objectified women of important art, while it, sans révérence, subverts the motif by painting herself as subject.
Michelle Erickson - Scholar Michelle Erickson is a Master of Arts from Lindenwood University. She presented in 2024 the
project report "Jacqueline Marval: Référence sans Révérence" / A Design for an Art History Lecture and Activity Series for a Club de
Lecture workshop provision at the Alliance Française of Philadelphia. Michelle is also a long-time history educator, and French
student.
