French Immersion Baking Class: la galette des rois

Join Julie and step into one of France’s most beloved New Year traditions: l’Épiphanie !

Celebrated on the first Sunday of January, it marks the arrival of the Three Kings—les rois mages—and brings with it a pastry that every French household looks forward to: the galette des rois. Flaky, golden puff pastry wrapped around a creamy almond frangipane, with a hidden fève inside… it’s simple elegance at its best.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll recreate this iconic galette completely from scratch. Together, we’ll laminate dough, craft the frangipane filling, assemble, score, and bake your own royal showstopper. Every step is guided and hands-on—no shortcuts, no store-bought pastry.

You will learn the vocabulary of French bakeries and pastry shops with a native speaker.

The class will be in French and you will leave not just with your own fresh-baked galette, but also with the stories behind the tradition, the confidence to recreate it at home, and maybe even the crown if you find the fève.

For students with a B2 level minimum (intermediate and advanced)

L’atelier is a French bakery born from a journey of passion, resilience, and a deep love for the culinary arts. Julie, originally from Paris,  founded L’atelier after being laid off in 2023, following 14 years in the corporate world. Rather than seeing it as a setback, she took it as a chance to pursue a lifelong dream. She returned home to Paris to study boulangerie at Le Cordon Bleu, where she fell in love with the art and science of French baking.

Julie says :

‘L’atelier is rooted in the traditions of French cuisine, yet inspired by Philadelphia’s vibrant energy and the diverse influences I’ve encountered along the way. This blend shows through in our ingredients, our recipes, and the stories we tell through each bake.

We place a special emphasis on sourcing the finest ingredients — from local farms and organic mills to French specialty suppliers — because I believe that food nourishes not just the body, but also the mind and spirit.

After starting as an online bakery, I am thrilled to be opening my first physical location in Manayunk. The new space will feature weeknight baking classes, weekend bakery retail, and private events, creating a place where the community can gather, learn, and share in the joy of French baking.’
