Synopsis

We are in 52 BC (yes, 52!). While not all of Gaul is occupied, the Egypt of the great Cleopatra—yes, the one with the nose—is under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Worse still, Cleopatra has chosen Caesar, the Emperor of the greatest of peoples, as her Julius. Or so he says.

The film recounts the adventures of the famous Gauls tasked with building a palace for Cleopatra in record time. Driven by irresistible dialogue and memorable characters, notably Jamel Debbouze as Numerobis and Gérard Darmon as Amonbofis, the film stands out for its sense of rhythm and its now-iconic lines.

Trailer

Alain Chabat is a French actor, comedian, director, screenwriter, producer and television presenter. Originally known for his work in the comedy group Les Nuls, including as the co-writer and lead actor of La Cité de la peur (1994), he later co-created and hosted the Burger Quiz game show, which became the most watched entertainment show in the history of French television.

Critics

It is really funny and it leaves the first one miles away. It has numerous gags and funny situations that made me laugh since the first minutes of the movie ….

Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra received largely positive reviews from critics, who praised its humor, special effects, and acting, especially that of Gérard Depardieu and Jamel Debbouze. Some critics noted that the film's humor, which is heavily based on French cultural and linguistic references, may not fully translate to international audiences. While the English version had some scenes cut, the original French film was considered a great success, both critically and commercially, and a significant improvement over its predecessor.
