La Compétition Culturelle des Alliances Françaises

Test your general knowledge in French and win a week in Bruxelles, Belgium !

Each year, the "DEFI Inter-Alliances" competition is organised by the participating Alliances Françaises (The Federation of Alliances Francaises USA), in collaboration with the Fondation des Alliances Françaises, headquartered in Paris.

In 2026, 14 Alliances Françaises in the USA are participating  : Dallas, Gainesville, San Diego, Miami Metro, Silicon Valley, Reno, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill, Philadelphie, Hartford, Westchester, Detroit.

Participants will take part in a general knowledge quiz in French, about Francophone countries and culture (France, French Speaking Africa, Caribbean, Canada/Quebec)  hosted on the Kahoot digital platform. Participants must use two digital devices during the competition: one device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) to access Zoom for the virtual event, and a smartphone to answer the Kahoot quiz.

The quiz is made of 20 to 25 questions in 5 categories : History/Geography, Music, Sport, Literature, Visual Arts (cinema, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media…) 

The competition unfolds in four stages:

• A local selection round, organised by each participating Alliance 
  

The local selection by Alliance Française de Philadelphie will be held virtually on

Saturday, 9 May, 11am (Eastern)

An optional practice round will be held online on Saturday, 2nd May, 11am (Eastern).

• A national selection round
  

The national selection will be held virtually on

Monday, 11 May, 12pm (Eastern)

and organised by the designated Alliances Françaises USA coordinating body.

• A semi-final by geographical zone (USA, Canada/Quebec, Caribbean)
  

The semi-final will take place online on

Saturday, 23 May, 2 pm (Eastern)

and organised by an Alliance Française in Northern America and the Caribean

• An international final

The international final will be held in-person at the Alliance Française of Bruxelles, during the week of 21 July 2025.

Finalists will answer the quiz using their smartphones, while questions will be displayed on a screen, with internet connectivity provided by the organisers.
The competition is open to all students currently enrolled in French courses at participating Alliances Françaises, provided they meet the following criteria:

• Must be at least 18 years old by 15 July 2026.
  
• Must have a French proficiency level (or be in the process of learning) A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2.
  
• Must not be a staff member or a board member of an Alliance Française.
  
• Must not be a native French speaker.
  

The two highest-scoring participants in each local and national selection round will advance to the next round.
The top-ranking participant in each geographical semi-final will qualify for the international final in Nice selection round.
