Long before artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Amedeo Modigliani became canonical names, Weill was offering them some of their
earliest exhibitions in her small Paris gallery, often at considerable personal and financial risk. A Jewish woman navigating the complex
and competitive Parisian art world at the beginning of the twentieth century, she played a crucial role in the emergence of modern art, yet
her name has long remained absent from mainstream narratives.
This lecture draws on the recent international exhibition dedicated to Berthe Weill, presented at the Grey Art Museum in New York, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, and most recently at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. The talk explores the artistic and social context of Paris at the dawn of the twentieth century, highlighting Weill’s remarkable eye for talent and the artists she championed at pivotal moments in their careers. Particular attention will also be given to the women artists she represented, many of whom were marginalized in their own time and are only now being reassessed. Despite her profound influence, Berthe Weill never achieved financial success and ultimately died in relative poverty. Her story offers a compelling lens through which to reconsider how the history of modern art has been written—and whose contributions have been remembered or overlooked.
