Flamboyants! is an original musical theatre production by Compagnie Tilawcis, founded on Réunion Island by playwright and director Florient Jousse. Bringing together artists from Réunion Island, New Orleans, and Puerto Rico, the production is a vibrant celebration of Creole heritage, where music, dance, theater, and storytelling converge to create an unforgettable stage experience.
At the heart of Flamboyants! is the story of a man adrift who is welcomed by a community of musicians. Together, they embark on a symbolic journey across oceans and cultures, discovering that music transcends language and connects people through shared histories and traditions. Their encounter reveals unexpected links between three territories shaped by colonialism, resilience, and cultural creativity.
The performance draws on the powerful traditions of maloya from Réunion Island, the spectacular artistry of the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans, and the vibrant rhythms of Puerto Rican bomba. Rather than presenting these traditions side by side, Flamboyants! weaves them into a dynamic dialogue that celebrates cultural exchange and collective memory.
Blending live music, theater, dance, ritual, and visual performance, the production offers audiences an immersive artistic experience that is both festive and deeply moving. It highlights the enduring power of artistic expression to preserve heritage, foster understanding, and build bridges across continents. Five languages are spoken on stage, and nearly a dozen instruments are played, fusing maloya, bomba, and Mardi Gras Indians songs. The piece explores themes of memory, identity, resilience, connection, and cultural transmission through the prism of the Creole experience. It shines a light on the richness of Creole cultures and their capacity to overcome historical oppression.
With its international ensemble and its message of hope, solidarity, and cultural resilience, Flamboyants! invites audiences to discover the richness of the Creole world and the universal language of music.
Plot Summary: Réunion Island. While a cyclone rages, a man curses his name before throwing himself in the Indian Ocean. He has no idea what repercussions this action will have on the other side of the world. From Puerto Rico to New Orleans, Creole peoples will unite to teach him his true history. A work of musical theater, documentary and fictional, even fantastical in certain moments, Flamboyants! asks us to interrogate what stories our own names carry, the ways we’re interconnected, and the cultural resilience of those who fight to not be forgotten.
