A Café Littéraire is much more than a book discussion—it is a tradition inspired by the literary cafés of France, where writers, artists, philosophers, and readers gathered to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and celebrate the written word. These cafés have long been places where conversation is just as important as the books themselves.

Our discussion, in French,  will explore the book's themes, characters, historical and cultural context, and the questions it raises. We encourage everyone to participate, listen with curiosity, and engage in respectful conversation. Feel free to share your impressions, ask questions, or simply enjoy hearing the thoughts of others.

We will meet every 6 to 8 weeks at the Alliance Française in Philadelphia and Françoise ( French Teacher)  will lead the discussion in French.

Literature has the remarkable ability to transport us across countries, cultures, and centuries. It invites us to experience lives different from our own while discovering emotions and ideas that unite us all.

So, bring your book,  grab a cup of coffee or tea, settle in, and let's enjoy a morning of conversation, discovery, and the pleasure of reading together.

Who is this café littéraire  for?

• Lovers of French-language literature, curious to explore new works
• Learners with level B1 or above in French
• Professionals, students and expatriates wishing to practice French in an informal and stimulating setting

Goals

• Meet other AF students from different levels
• Build confidence and improve oral skills
• Practical learning: Practice French through reading, debating and exchanging ideas.
