French Immersion Baking Class : la baguette

Join Julie for a hands-on afternoon devoted to France’s most iconic bread — golden, crisp, and beautifully airy within !


You will explore every step from mixing and fermentation to shaping, scoring, and baking, uncovering the secrets behind that perfect crust and crumb.

You will learn the vocabulary of French bakeries and pastry shops with a native speaker.

The class will be in French language and will include a welcome drink and dough to take home so you can bake fresh baguettes the next day.

Open to all,  with a B2 level minimum (intermediate and advanced) in French.

L’Atelier is a French bakery born from a journey of passion, resilience, and a deep love for the culinary arts. Julie, originally from Paris,  founded L’Atelier after being laid off in 2023, following 14 years in the corporate world. Rather than seeing it as a setback, she took it as a chance to pursue a lifelong dream. She returned home to Paris to study boulangerie at Le Cordon Bleu, where she fell in love with the art and science of French baking.

Julie says :

‘L’Atelier is rooted in the traditions of French cuisine, yet inspired by Philadelphia’s vibrant energy and the diverse influences I’ve encountered along the way. This blend shows through in our ingredients, our recipes, and the stories we tell through each bake.

We place a special emphasis on sourcing the finest ingredients — from local farms and organic mills to French specialty suppliers — because I believe that food nourishes not just the body, but also the mind and spirit.

After starting as an online bakery, I am thrilled to be opening my first physical location in Manayunk. The new space will feature weeknight baking classes, weekend bakery retail, and private events, creating a place where the community can gather, learn, and share in the joy of French baking.’

All classes open upon enrollment. The Alliance Française de Philadelphie reserves the right to cancel classes and change teachers if necessary without advanced notice. Courses are typically canceled due to insufficient enrollment or unavailability of a teacher. If your course is canceled, you will be notified by telephone or email and given the option to transfer to another class, to receive a tuition credit, or to receive a full refund.

A class with only 3 to 4 students lasts 1.5 hours and a class with 5 students or more lasts 2 hours. If the class only has one or two students, the Alliance Française de Philadelphie may ask students to join a different group.

I understand that to be eligible for a refund, I must contact the office at least 24 hours before the first class. After the first class, only a credit for the next session will be issued (a $30.00 cancellation fee plus $37.50 per class is retained by the Alliance Francaise). No credit after the end of the 3rd week of classes.
