Nouvelle Vague is a 2025 comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater. Starring Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard, Zoey Deutch as Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin as Jean-Paul Belmondo, it follows the shooting of Breathless, one of the first feature films of the Nouvelle Vague era of French cinema, in 1959.

French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard famously said, “Photography is truth. And cinema is truth 24 frames per second.” Yet the late Godard would eat his words if he were still around to see Richard Linklater’s endlessly entertaining biopic-cum-hangout film, Nouvelle Vague. Beloved for period pieces like Dazed and Confused, Linklater indulges every cinephile’s dream by re-creating with astounding accuracy the look and swagger of Paris in the late 1950s. Fueled by envy for his peers’ debut films, Jean-Luc Godard (an uncanny Guillaume Marbeck) uses his wit and a fair share of deception to secure funding for his new film even without a script or stars. That is, until he ropes in famous American actress Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) and amateur-boxer-turned-actor Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) to play the leads. The skeptical stars, along with a band of outsiders for a crew, must navigate Godard’s manic shooting style and confusing direction lest cinema history will never be made. With Nouvelle Vague, Linklater creates a fascinating and fun romp through history that will appease Godard-devouts and inspire a new generation to pick up the camera and change cinema forever.
