Modigliani Quartet

Presented by the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society

The Modigliani Quartet (French: Quatuor Modigliani) is a French string quartet founded in Paris in 2003 by four close friends, following their studies at the Conservatoire de Paris. Founding violinist Philippe Bernhard left the group in 2016 and was replaced by Amaury Coeytaux.

The founding members studied with the Ysaÿe Quartet in Paris, attended classes by Walter Levin and György Kurtág in 2004, and had the opportunity to work with the Artemis Quartet at the Universität der Künste in Berlin in 2005. They first drew attention by winning the Frits Philips String Quartet competition in Eindhoven (2004), the Vittorio Rimbotti competition in Florence (2005) and the Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York (2006).

The Modigliani Quartet & Gautier Capuçon - Schubert: Quintet in C Major (2020)

Famous for its energy and passion, the Paris-based Modigliani Quartet brings a stylish precision to every performance. The ensemble begins their PCMS program with Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s set of tiny Zen koans, each of its 12 microludes exacting the utmost of the modern “sound byte” attention span, or, in the best sense of a 12-course tasting menu, a delicious series of sound bites. The Modiglianis then turn their attention to Beethoven, concluding the evening with one of the more famous quartets from the composer’s middle period. The C Major Quartet has acquired the nickname Eroica because of its glorious, triumphant finale.

Kurtág: Quartet, Op. 13, Microludes (Hommage à Mihály András)
Beethoven
: Quartet in F Major, Op. 18, No. 1
Beethoven
: Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3
