Join us for a tour of the Rosenbach in the French language!
In addition to its world-renowned collections of British literature and American history, the Rosenbach Museum & Library holds significant French-language collections spanning centuries and continents. In this French-language tour of the Rosenbach’s holdings, you will view (and even touch!) rare books including Samuel de Champlain’s Voyages de la Nouvelle France (Paris, 1632) and the Comte de Buffon’s Enlightenment classic Histoire naturelle, générale et particuliére (Paris: L’Imprimerie Royale, 1749-1804). Decipher the handwriting on a manuscript inventory of the jewels of Marie Antoinette, made after her execution, and read the details of an early treaty forged between the Kingdom of France and the new United States of America. Enter the erotic worlds of Oscar Wilde and Jean Cocteau, and explore the fascinating story of how French African author René Maran’s manuscript for his novel Batouala ended up in Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach’s collection with the help of Harlem Renaissance founder Alain LeRoy Locke.
Following the collections tour, attendees will enjoy a wine-and-cheese reception in the elegant dining room and parlor of the historic Rosenbach home. The tour is intended to be enjoyable for French learners at all levels. Wherever you are in your study, we invite you to attend!
