In November, come discover two movies based on the thematic L'Afrique des années 70/ Africa in the seventies. 

Les années 70 en Afrique ont constitué une période de transition majeure, tant sur le plan des mentalités de même qu’une partie de la planète que sur le plan politique après la décolonisation. Ces deux adaptations, l’une d’une BD à succès et l’autre d’un roman, portent au cinéma les enjeux de ces années. Aya de Yopougon fait vivre la vie d’un quartier d’Abidjan à travers trois amies qui pénètrent dans la vie d’adulte et qui font face aux mentalités conservatrices sur la place des femmes, tandis que Notre Dame du Nil raconte la grande histoire dans la petite en dépeignant un pensionnat pour jeunes filles au Rwanda en 1973 et les tensions naissantes qui préfigurent du génocide.

Seventies in Africa have constituted a major transitional period, both in terms of mentalities, as a large part of the world, and political issues after the decolonization. These two adaptations, one being a successful comic book and the other a novel, explore with cinema the issues of this decade. Aya de Yopougon makes us discover life in a neighborhood of Abidjan through three friends entering adult life and facing conservative mentalities about the women's place in society. Notre Dame du Nil tells us about History through a story depicting a rwandan boarding school for girls in 1973 and the emerging tensions foreshadowing the genocide of 1993.

• Duration: 2 hours of screening + Discussion Time (1 hour approximately)
• Place : Center City Location - 1420 Walnut Street - Suite 700 - Philadelphia
• Group Size: 20 maximum
• Language : The movie will be in French with English subtitles. Discussion time will be both in French and English depending on what each person is most comfortable with ! We encourage exchanges of any kind.
• Fee: Free for Members / Donation-based for non members : you can pay what you want !
• Registration: at least 48 hours prior to the event (depending on the number of places left)
