The spider-woman in French textual and iconographic culture
She is universal. Omnipresent in our environment, she has haunted our consciousness since the dawn of time. A bearer of hope or sorrow, according to French proverbs—“spider in the morning, sorrow,” “spider in the evening, hope”—she never leaves anyone indifferent.
Although she is now best known in a male incarnation in the Spider-Man series, elsewhere the spider is an embodiment of femininity. A femininity that is at times fragile and gentle, at others threatening and unloved—predator or victim, and also an artist.
Through a selection of texts and iconographic documents, Sophie Schaller Wright invites you to explore her many forms in this
mini-course.
