Immigrant Heritage Month : Short-Movie Night

-
Alliance française de Philadelphie - 1420 Walnut St

Join us in June to celebrate National Immigrant Heritage Month with a short-movie night, a post film discussion and intercultural exchange about the films with members of Caribbean Community in Philadelphia and Alliance Française de Philadelphie !

Caribbean Community in Philadelphia and the Alliance Française de Philadelphie have joined forces to recognize the contribution and the diversity of cultures of immigrants to this country and to celebrate them.

We will be screening three films in French language with English subtitles to look at the history of the immigrants from West Africa in the Caribbean and Guyane, how their descendants live with that heritage, inherit land, culture, music and how they make it their own.

After the films, we will discuss with all the attendees. Exchange about your emotions, opinions with the other members of the Alliance Française and Caribbean Community Philadelphia.

Drinks and Refreshments will be served

ORIGIN KONGO

52 minutes - Documentary

Guadeloupe

Between 1857 and 1862, more than 16,000 African men and women were bought by French recruiters on the West African slave markets, then freed. But they were forced to sign ten-year work contracts in Martinique and Guadeloupe. For a long time, these workers remained invisible in official history. Their descendants retrace in bits and pieces the memory of their ancestors known as “Kongos”.
