<product_content><![CDATA[Translator and Professor Emerita of French and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Stephanie Schechner will join us for a presentation and discussion on the work of French author Mireille Best Stephanie will talk about her research on Mireille Best's novels and how she came about translating some of her work. She will explain the translation process from French into English and how a translation is, in many aspects, an interpretation of someone else's writing and thinking. She will also read extracts from the books Camille in October (2019) and [Hymn to Moray Eels](https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/distributed/H/bo258376591.html) (2025). Following the presentation, Philippe Poirier, Executive Director of the Alliance Française de Philadelphie, will lead a discussion and Q&A session with Stephanie. After, linger for refreshments and to purchase signed copies of the presented books.## Book summaries Hymn to Moray Eels (2025) Seagull Books distributed in the US by University of Chicago Press"If only you were a boy...""Mila is a young lesbian being treated for a mysterious illness in a single-sex sanatorium in 1950s France. Separated from her mother, younger brothers Jan and Tristan and a never-ending series of temporary "Paters",Mila finds friends of all sorts in the chaotic world of the sanatorium. A lively, funny ensemble cast will enchant readers and keep them laughing. Among them, we find Paule, a staff member, who takes a romantic interest in Mila then later turns cold. Marie, a boy-crazy teen obsessed with losing her virginity, remarks that she would be interested in Mila "if only you were a boy". The two Nicoles, best friends forever weeping over being separated as roommates, add drama to the regular room changing rituals enacted by the sanatorium director who is afraid the girls will develop "bad habits" if they room together with anyone for too long. The accordion-playing Josette regales them all with her music which recalls the rich, musical backdrop of 1950s France. The central drama of Mila and Paule's relationship comes to a head with the arrival of Little Odile, a cute younger girl who Paule takes an interest in. Will Mila withdraw in the face of romantic competition? Or will she rise to the challenge and figure out a creative way to come through the emotional storm? In this quirky tale of a sensitive young woman's search for her own place in the world, the reader will recall their own experiences of teen lust, love, and friendship. Throughout, Best's signature sense of humor and fine eye for emotional nuance is in evidence. Camille in October (2019) Seagull Books distributed in the US by University of Chicago Press‘My father is dead, I just killed him.’Camille struggles to figure out who she is and where she fits in the world. She is a young lesbian woman coming of age in a coastal, working-class neighbourhood in 1950s France. Her mother holds the family together. Her father, a war veteran, is largely silent except when his inner rage erupts in violence. Her sister, Ariane, provides comic relief, while her brother, Abel, a construction worker, is a lost soul who suffers from severe seizures. Camille herself can usually be found curled up with a book taking it all in. But an intellectual and sexual relationship with her dentist’s wife opens a world of new possibilities to Camille. Where will this lead her? Suicide, murder, accidental death—all are possible in this unconventional narrative. As a young adult, Camille is not always the most reliable narrator, but she is one that charms with her intelligence, her lack of pretention and her strong sense of connection to her roots. With her, we readers embark on a fundamental—and universal—quest to balance where we come from with who we need to become. ## About Stephanie SchechnerStephanie Schechner is a Professor Emerita of French at Widener University, Pennsylvania and has published extensive works on Mireille Best as well as on other French and Francophone women writers including Jovette Marchessault, Colette, Nathalie Sarraute, Rachilde, Marguerite Duras, and Jocelyne François. <product_title><![CDATA[Heritage Film : L' Histoire d'Adèle H]]></product_title>
<product_content><![CDATA[## # Celebrate Heritage Month with a French Heritage Film ! ## L'Histoire d'Adèle H de François Truffaut (1975) with Robinson Bruce, Marriott Sylvia, Isabelle AdjaniRestored Version (95min) Synopsis Miss Lewly took up residence in a boarding house in Halifax, England in 1863. There, she sought out Lieutenant Pinson—with whom she was madly in love, though he did not return her affection. No matter how clearly he made this known to her, she continued to pursue him, even fully aware that he had a mistress. Miss Lewly was, in reality, Adèle Hugo, the poet's second daughter. She strove to marry him at all costs, going so far as to sabotage Pinson's planned marriage to another woman. Adèle's mother passed away, and when Pinson departed for Barbados, she followed him. Taken in by a Mrs. Baa—who subsequently alerted the Hugo family—she was sent back to France and committed to an institution. [Trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AIabm5_co8)The Story of Adèle H., directed by François Truffaut, is a haunting portrait of obsessive love and emotional disintegration. Based on the real diaries of Adèle Hugo — daughter of literary icon Victor Hugo — the film follows her descent into fixation as she pursues a British officer who does not return her affection. Isabelle Adjani delivers a powerful and mesmerizing performance. Her portrayal of Adèle balances fragility, dignity, and madness so convincingly that the film often feels less like historical drama and more like an intimate psychological tragedy. Adjani's expressive eyes and shifting emotional tones reveal the inner world of a woman consumed by longing, isolation, and defiance. Truffaut's direction is restrained and poetic, reflecting Adèle's internal turmoil through subdued color palettes, quiet pacing, and close-up shots that emphasize her emotional unraveling. Instead of sensationalizing her obsession, the film approaches it with empathy, showing how love — when deprived of balance and reciprocity — can evolve into self-destruction. While the deliberate pacing may feel slow for some viewers, it mirrors the suffocating nature of Adèle's infatuation. The narrative doesn't aim to judge her but to illuminate a tragic psychological truth: love without reciprocity can become a prison. Ultimately, The Story of Adèle H. is both heartbreaking and unforgettable — an exploration of passion pushed beyond the bounds of reason, anchored by a performance that lingers long after the film ends. <product_content><![CDATA[# Prêts pour un sans-faute ? À vos stylos ! Participate in our French dictée, a unique opportunity to put your language skills to the test and challenge your knowledge of the French language. "What is dictée?" you may ask. A dictée is a kind of French exam that tests your listening, spelling, and grammar skills. During a dictée, a speaker reads a text while the participants listen and transcribe what they hear. The goal is to write the most accurate transcription of the text! Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced, this experience is open to all who wish to improve their grammar, vocabulary, and spelling in French. After the event, participants will submit their work via email to be checked and corrected. A prize will be awarded for the best dictation! The event will be composed of two sessions: one beginner-friendly and the other for advanced participants. Each session will last 30 minutes. The beginner-level session will begin at 5:30pm, and the advanced-level session will begin at 6:00pm. The text for both sessions comes from Le pays des autres by Leïla Slimani , and in each session, there will be three readings of the text. #### First reading: a general reading of the text so that participants can hear the text in its entirety. Second reading: a slow reading of the text, during which participants will copy down the dictation as they hear it. Typically, sentences and paragraphs are read at least twice. Third reading: another complete general reading of the text so that participants can check their work and correct any mistakes, forgotten words, or punctuation marks. With the French Club, Kate visited France for the first time, both in Senlis where she stayed with a French family and in Brittany with a group of high school friends. Kate's love for French and France intensified at Lawrence University in Wisconsin where thanks to a marvelous professor, she discovered French literature. She spent her junior year of college in Aix-en-Provence in the Faculté des Lettres. After graduating from Lawrence, she continued her studies in French literature at Columbia University where she got her doctorate. ## Event Information Date : Friday, May 15, 2026Time : 5:00-6.00pmLocation : HYBRIDE: Zoom AND Alliance Française de Philadelphie 1420 Walnut Street, Philadelphia PA 19102 Language : French - B2 Level MinimumCost : $10.00 for AF members | $15.00 for non AF members Register below and we will send you a Zoom link the morning of the event to join in!Missed the deadline? ## About the Art Historian Art Historian and Museum Educator Tosca Ruggieri was raised between France and Italy. Fueled by a lifelong love for art, Tosca established Art with Tosca in 2021 after moving to Washington D.C. Tosca holds degrees from EPHE-Sorbonne, Paris and King's College London. Prior to founding Art with Tosca, Tosca enriched her experience by working for a prominent art collector in Paris and in London art galleries. Now, Tosca shares her passion on a wider scale through a series of online lectures. Based in Washington D.C., Tosca also curates captivating tours of the D.C. museums, in particular at the National Gallery of Art, where she guides guests through a treasure trove of masterpieces, spanning the Italian Renaissance to modern times. <product_content><![CDATA[### # The Forgotten Dealer of the Avant-Garde Art historian Tosca Ruggieri presents a lecture devoted to one of the most overlooked yet essential figures in the history of modern art: Berthe Weill. Long before artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Amedeo Modigliani became canonical names, Weill was offering them some of their earliest exhibitions in her small Paris gallery, often at considerable personal and financial risk. A Jewish woman navigating the complex and competitive Parisian art world at the beginning of the twentieth century, she played a crucial role in the emergence of modern art, yet her name has long remained absent from mainstream narratives. This lecture draws on the recent international exhibition dedicated to Berthe Weill, presented at the Grey Art Museum in New York, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, and most recently at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. The talk explores the artistic and social context of Paris at the dawn of the twentieth century, highlighting Weill’s remarkable eye for talent and the artists she championed at pivotal moments in their careers. Particular attention will also be given to the women artists she represented, many of whom were marginalized in their own time and are only now being reassessed. Despite her profound influence, Berthe Weill never achieved financial success and ultimately died in relative poverty. Her story offers a compelling lens through which to reconsider how the history of modern art has been written—and whose contributions have been remembered or overlooked. Tosca's mission is to make art a more approachable through engaging experiences. Whether you're joining from the comfort of your home or exploring museums halls in person, Tosca offers journeys through centuries of artistic expression. ## Event InformationDate : Tuesday, May 5, 2026Time : 7:00-8:00pmFormat : 45-50 min Lecture in English, followed by 10-15 min Q&A in French (optional)Location : Online via Zoom - Not available for the live event? <product_content><![CDATA[# Join us for a unique performance of theater and dance ! ## EUPHRATE on tour during the 2024/2025/2026 seasons in FRANCE, the UNITED STATES, BELGIUM, and CANADA Daughter of a Turkish father and a Norman mother, Euphrate is a high school senior facing challenges within the education system. Besides her rather mediocre grades, she must soon express her choice of career path: a real conundrum. She begins to wonder how her dual culture has influenced her identity. In a witty and humorous dialogue with her father, she embarks on a journey to explore her Turkish roots and childhood memories. Blending dance and words, the show joyfully expresses the path toward affirming her own voice as a woman. NIL BOSCA, Writing, concept, and performanceSTANISLAS ROQUETTE & OLIVIER CONSTANT, Assistant directors, ALEXE POUKINE & HASSAM GHANCY, Writing collaborators, CHRYSTEL CALVET, Choreographic oversight, STEPHANIE VERISSIMO, Sound, GENEVIEVE SOUBIROU, Lighting Recommended for ages 12 and up, the show is in French with English subtitles## Origin of the project "Initially, when I started to imagine this show in 2019, I wanted to address the question of desire. How does a person manage to break free from the constraints imposed by their gender, culture, and social class to access their own desires? What path do they take to escape the pressures from the education system and then the world of work, in order to identify what they truly want to do? I wanted to tell a life journey that would reflect this difficult transition, from a teenage quest for meaning to full blossoming in adulthood. I then sought to meet people who could inspire me for the creation of this character. It took me some time and several stages of work to realize that the story I needed to draw from was my own. I wanted to weave together three essential themes that have marked my personal journey. The first is career orientation and how school prepares us for it—or not. I myself changed paths three times, always in search of "what truly resonates within me." I questioned the meaning of my future from an early age, but the answer only came to me much later. Next is the question of my cultural identity: my mother is French, my father is Turkish, and this dual belonging has shaped my development as a young woman. It has become a central point in my search for meaning and desire. By overcoming the shyness that prevented me from questioning my Turkish roots, I realized how essential it was to explore this part of myself. Finally, I had to navigate the internal and external obstacles related to being a woman. This is how Euphrate was born, my fictional double, through whom I hope to turn my story into something more universal, touching on a reality larger than my own." [TEASER](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUYUE7ztnUE)https://www.nilbosca.com/en/ [NIL BOSCA](https://www.nilbosca.com/en/)After earning a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Nil Bosca turned to theatre and joined the Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, followed by the École du Jeu. <product_content><![CDATA[# Join us for a screening and a post-film discussion in French ! Between members of the Alliance Française and students from Drexel University, Department of Global Studies and Modern Languages! Petit Pays directed by Éric Barbier, based on the acclaimed novel Petit Pays by Gaël Faye 2020 France, 153min - In French with English SubtitlesSynopsisThe film follows Gabriel ("Gaby"), a ten-year-old boy enjoying a peaceful, carefree childhood with his younger sister Ana. Their father, Michel, is a French businessman living a comfortable expatriate life, while their mother, Yvonne, is a Rwandan refugee haunted by memories of home. Through Gaby's innocent eyes, the viewer witnesses both the beauty of childhood—days spent stealing mangoes, playing with friends, and exploring nature—and the gradual disintegration of his world as political violence and family discord shatter this paradise. ### [Trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iprrYxw8MOI) The film's power lies in its faithfulness to the child's perspective: we see the world change as Gaby does, from innocence to incomprehensible loss. The lush landscapes and gentle pacing of the first half make the later descent into chaos even more devastating, showing war not through soldiers or politics, but through the dreams and fears of a boy who just wants to be a child. The film stars Dijibril Vancoppenolle as Gaby, Jean-Paul Rouve as his father, and Isabelle Kabano as his mother. Their performances, especially Kabano's portrayal of a woman torn between conflicting identities, have been praised for emotional authenticity. The film is not an exact reproduction of the book, but it captures its spirit—a story balancing love and conflict, Africa and the West, childhood and violence. The movie closely mirrors the novel's autobiographical roots. Gaël Faye, the Franco-Rwandan author and musician, was himself born in Burundi to a French father and Rwandan mother. His 2016 novel Petit Pays won several literary prizes, including the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, and has been translated into more than thirty languages. The book moves from the tranquility of childhood to the awakening of political awareness, portraying the fragility of innocence in a world fractured by hatred. Together, the novel and the film form a moving dialogue between memory and trauma—between the written word and the visual image. Petit Pays reminds us that even in times of violence, childhood memories can still hold traces of beauty, warmth, and an enduring longing for peace. The film's lingering question—can innocence survive history?—echoes deeply across cultures, making Petit Pays both a personal story and a universal reflection on what it means to lose one's world too soon. Il pleuvait des oiseaux (d'après le roman de Jocelyne Saucier)Director Louise Archambault 2019 - 126min - DramaQuebec, Canada. Nowadays. Three elderly hermits live in the woods, cut off from the rest of the world. While wildfires threaten the region, their quiet life is about to be shaken by the arrival of two women… A luminous octogenarian unjustly institutionalized her whole life, and a young photographer charged with interviewing survivors of the region's deadliest forest fire. After the death of the eldest hermit, the two women make an astonishing discovery: hundreds of painting echoing his tragic experience related to that devastating fire. A story of intertwined destinies, where love can happen at any age.CAST Andrée Lachapelle,Gilbert Sicotte, Rémy Girard, Kenneth Walsh, Eve Landry Éric Robidoux, Louise Portal, Marie-Ginette Guay LOUISE ARCHAMBAULTScreenwriter and director, Louise Archambault, made her debut with the internationally acclaimed film Atomic Saké, winning many prizes such as the Jutra for Best Short Film. In 2018, she directed And the Birds Rained Down, her 3rd Feature Film which is set to release in September ## [TRAILER](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kj_Wq8FfI8) WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR'When I first read Jocelyne Saucier's novel And the Birds Rained Down, I was enchanted by its singular universe. Firstly, Jocelyne's writing is very cinematographic. We see the hermits' cabins hidden deep within the woods of Abitibi with its foggy, dark lakes. We smell the odor of the damp forest, of the lichen, and of the wooden stove. We are in the daily lives of the hermits, wrinkled and alert, with their many fulfilled lives, and we are captivated by Gertrude, this 80 year old newcomer who brings an astonishing breath of fresh air, even though her past rests in confined madness. Once I read the novel, these crude, ripe characters, with unusual paths, fully inhabited me and filled my heart and soul. It speaks of something great in such as simple way. And the Birds Rained Down depicts a unique, visual, sensorial and cinematographic universe with rich, atypical characters. It is an ode to life and to love, a universal subject, that opens insight on Others, on differences. This is why I wanted to make it a film filled with hope and grace. Throughout the script's various themes, meaning that of the past (its weight), wandering and fleeing (the forest), redemption (by art); we always speak of love above all else. Lost love, new love, atypical love; every one of them vibrant with passion. As Marie-Desneige discovers love for the first time at 80 years old, Ted Boychuck dies at 82, always haunted by the love he did not know how to choose. Two main love stories that intertwine and reply to each other. And all of the other characters are implicated in one way or another. With And the Birds Rained Down, I wish to create a film that makes you want to enjoy life and to love. With these three hermits and a former institutionalized patient, we will never see the elderly the same way. And maybe, we will hope to grow old with the same vitality of heart as they have. This film is an ode to life and to love, with its flaws and its pain, with its surprises and its victories. It offers a look on differences, on singular, marginal beings, who show us that this same humanity hides within all of us. » - Louise Archambault ## Event information Day: Friday, April 17th, 2025Time: 6:30 PMDuration: 2 hoursLocation: Alliance Française de Philadelphie, 1420 Walnut St, Suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19102Language: English, FrenchFee: $10 for AF members / $15 non AF members Drinks (Canadian Beer) and cheese/charcuterie board will be served ## Not a member yet? #### [Purchase a membership](https://www.afphila.com/membership-and-support/membership/) today!]]></product_content>

The beginner-level session will begin at 5:30pm, and the advanced-level session will begin at 6:00pm. The text for both sessions comes from Jacaranda by Gaël Faye, and in each session, there will be three readings of the text. ## Event Information Date: Monday, April 13, 2026Time: 10:00am-12:00pmLocation: Alliance Française de Philadelphie, 1420 Walnut St, Suite 700, Philadelphia, PA 19102Language: French## About the Festival: The Festival international des auteurs francophones© is the flagship event of the Rencontre des Auteurs Francophones© network.First held in New York in 2021, the festival has since expanded worldwide.
